Tomb of Sher Shah Suri is an imposing structure standing in the middle of an artificial structure rising from a large octagonal terrace. This terrace has stair steps which leads to the edge of water of the artificial lake.In the middle of the upper terrace lies the tomb main chamber standing on a low octagonal plinth. The upper terrace is enclosed by a battlemented parapet wall with octagonal domed chambers at four corners, two small projecting pillared balconies on each of its four sides and pierced with a doorway in the east forms the only approach to the tomb.
The main chamber of the Tomb is a very large octagonal structure surrounded by verandah from all four sides. The tomb chamber has three lofty arches on each of the eight sides. They rise 22 feet higher than the verandah roof and support the magnificent and lofty dome which is one of the largest domes in India. There are numerous windows on the top portion of the wall of the chamber and this makes the chamber well lighted and well ventilated. The Mihrab on western side wall were once beautifully decorated with stone carvings and were adorned with lines from Quran,The Holy book of Islam. But with time all this decoration has gone and the entire tomb is now discoloured. Now only traces of interior decoration is visible on the walls.
In a small arched recess above the mihrab on the outside wall is an inscription in two lines recording the completion of the tomb by his son and successor Salim or Islam Shah, some 3 months after the death of Sher Shah who died in A.D.1545.
