Monkey Mia – located at a distance of 850 kms from Perth, is housed in the Shark bay Heritage area close to the town of Denham. The waters around Monkey Mia have been declared a marine park.
The pride of Australia’s Coral coast, it is believed that Monkey Mia, has got its name from a pearling boat named “Monkey” that was anchored here in the late 19th century. With a moderate type of climate throughout the year, Monkey Mia offers lovely warm days and pleasant nights. Far from the maddening pressures of city life and the pollution, Monkey Mia is a clean green place to enjoy a great vacation. The area has preserved its virgin beauty from too much development and the pristine blues and the golden beaches are a nature lover’s delight.

Monkey Mia is popular for the bottlenose dolphins that come and visit the beach  and interact with the humans.. These wild dolphins have been visiting the area since the 1960s on their own free will and enjoy the human company that they find here. In addition to the tourists there are a number of marine biologists who find this the perfect place to study the dolphins in their natural habitat. There is a Dolphin Information Centre that has been set up for assistance and Monkey Mia plays the perfect host to the large number of tourists who come here each year to watch the dolphins and enjoy a lovely holiday on this scenic land. It’s amazing to watch the feeding of the dolphins and the manner in which they interact with the humans around.

In addition to the wonderful dolphins there are a host of great activities to enjoy in Monkey Mia. Indulge in some fun filled activities like kayaking, fishing, beach volleyball, bush walking or a glass bottomed boat tour. There are beautiful cruises on the pristine blues where the travellers can watch the dolphins, turtles, sharks and dugongs in their natural habitat.

For the more adventurous, a four wheel drive (4WD) to the great Australian outback, Shell beach or the Francois Peron National park is recommended. A trip to the “Ocean Park “ is a learning experience in itself and the kids are sure to love it. There are also other exciting activities like a camel ride at the Dolphin beach . For the scuba divers – the crystal blue waters are a beautiful treasure house to explore.

Accommodation of all types to suit budget and preferences of the discerning traveller is available here at Monkey Mia. The tourists can choose from lovely luxurious beach front rooms, villas or backpackers accommodation or hostels.

Just let your hair down and have a carefree holiday pampering yourself and the taste buds to the hilt. There are many beautiful locations located close to Monkey Mia to visit while you are here. Mt. Augustus – the world’s largest rock – towering at a height of 700 metres, is just a short drive away. The Ningaloo Reef – Australia’s largest fringing coral reef stretches across a distance of 300 kms also holds the distinction of being the world’s largest reef found so close to land.
