The reason why data loss can be so catastrophic is because data plays an integral part in our lives. From our everyday existence to the functioning of large corporations, data is a defining factor.
Why Data Loss is Taken so Seriously
Unless data is trivial and of no consequence, data loss is, usually, taken extremely seriously. Large corporations run because of the data they create, share and store. Therefore, every precaution is taken to prevent data loss and heavy investments are made to make data recovery possible. If data is lost permanently, it affects the functioning of a corporation at every level. Even at a personal level, if data is lost permanently, it could make life extremely inconvenient. The bottom line, therefore, is that data loss is not taken lightly.
Finance Sectors and Data Loss
The present-day functioning involves the storage of data of every sort. The financial sector is technologically dependent and all their transactions happen, using computerised data. The volumes of data include all customer-related information, all inventories and all employee records. Losing data in the financial sector would mean losing valuable data and some part, if not all parts, of day-to-day functioning will be affected. Data loss creates delays and this will amount to financial loss. Further, losing important customer information can lead to loss of credibility.
Defence
Data in the defence sector is heavily guarded. Loss of data can happen due to data theft. In this case it can result in security being compromised. Valuable data cannot fall in the wrong hands. Inadvertent data loss can lead to serious security threats which can affect an entire nation. Therefore, the extent of security to prevent data loss in the defence sector is very high indeed.
Research and Development
R&D is all about data. If data is lost, the whole process of research and development would come to a standstill. Many man-hours are spent doing research collating data, forming conclusions in the form of more data and, finally, arriving at data that can lead to progress. Losing data at any point in time during this process can put a spoke in the wheels of progress.
The Consequences
There is a reason why data loss creates panic and pandemonium. If a corporation loses considerably important data, it can bring work to a standstill. Employees have to stop work and many man-hours are lost thus. Important records are lost which can lead to serious financial loss. Further, to compound the inconvenience and financial loss, disgruntled customers may take legal action. The loss of credibility can lead to business being affected and further financial loss. Added to all this, is the cost of actually recovering great volumes of data.
Many companies have not been able to survive extreme data loss. Either the financial cost has been too much or the loss of credibility has made it difficult to sustain in the market. While companies take backup extremely seriously, data loss can still happen in the most unexpected manner. Natural disasters can wipe away all signs of data and backup which can leave a company reeling and struggling for survival.
Data loss can also happen by design, when rival companies can use hackers to steal data. Losing data this way means a company can lose competitive advantage, which translates into loss of income. Therefore, considering the drastic consequences of data loss in the modern world, it is taken extremely seriously.
Conclusion
Even in our everyday lives, we use data to manage our accounts, contain our records and capture important events digitally. If we lose data, we then lose important records and even important photographs of special days. While data can be recovered most of the time, if it is permanently lost, it can be extremely frustrating. While we have gone too far in the world of information technology to turn back the clock, we can try to protect our data as much as possible. Data recovery and data backup are the two redeeming aspects to counter the threat of data loss.
It is perhaps natural that for all the benefits of digital data, there has to be some drawbacks. We cannot stop using data but we can try to cushion the impact of data loss. An increasingly popular prevention mode is remote data backup. This offers a sense of security even against extreme natural disasters as it remains off-site. However, the world of information technology is extremely vulnerable to Murphy’s Law. Therefore, even when something cannot go wrong, it still might go wrong!
