On June 3, Microsoft unveiled its new search tool called Bing. A lot of people considered it the first salvo in a head-to-head challenge to search giant Google. Microsoft has hardly mentioned Google in its promotions, choosing to simply reiterate Bing's features. While there is little debate that Bing is a much more robust tool than Live Search, experts are less certain about whether Bing presents a real alternative to Google.
Bing has a few features that are very appealing to the typical search user. One of the most appealing is the "table of contents" that often appears in the upper left-hand column. Another would be a search history that is easily accessible. Overall, computer gurus who have tried out Bing have been quite positive, and they haven't unearthed any obvious omissions. They tend to think that the huge gap that stood between Google and Microsoft's Live Search can be mostly bridged by Bing.
The user interface that Bing presents is described as both cleaner and more comprehensive, with the results pages presented neatly. However, most computer gurus say that they can't imagine giving up Google altogether. One reason is that Google is the default browser for Firefox. But they also believe that though they didn't make use of Microsoft's Live Search, they do plan to use Bing. Microsoft has heavily advertised Bing, but whether that will be enough to attract large numbers of users away from Google is difficult to forecast.
For ordinary searches, Bing shows results that look very much like Google's 10 hits per page. However, Bing has a few extras that Google does not. For example, if you do a travel-related search and click "Local" on Bing's results page, you'll be directed to a page that has a map. If you select "Deals," you'll find results from Microsoft's Farecast travel tool. A search on a particular car make will result in an image on Bing and specs about fuel economy and costs. So it appears that if you primarily do shopping related searches, Bing could be the top competitor to Google.
As to whether Bing will unseat Google from the summit of the search kingdom, most computer gurus think that whatever measurable inroads Bing makes, they will be at the expense of other top search sites like Yahoo. The top argument that frequent Google users present is that Google "isn't broken," and therefore there is no reason to "fix" it, which they perceive Bing as striving to do.
The ultimate conclusion many search gurus have made is that Bing will not knock Google off its place at the summit of the search engine beauty contest. It is more apt to kick Yahoo back to a remote third place.
