Most of the people get scared of the dentist. Do you know the reason behind it? It is because they had a bad experience with a dental procedure in the past or might have heard from any of the near and dear ones about the dental pain experienced by that person during the dental procedure.

Many people had a bad experience in dentistry in past decades. But nowadays, people are not scared of the dentist because they hardly experience any pain in dental works. Painless dentistry is, in fact, putting an end to the dental fear of patients.

Dentists usually offer inhalation agents or intravenous sedation or oral medication for the sedation dentistry. With sedation dentistry dental pain can be controlled. It is meant for clients who have dental anxiety or dental fear or who have had a very painful dental experience.

There are many options available for maintenance of pain for the sedation dentistry. Read some of the pain maintenance options below.

Local anesthesia is the most commonly used anesthesia type. The dentist first numbs the part with gel. An injection is then administered to numb that area for the dentist to work on. The effects of numbing usually last from 5 minutes to 3 hours after the treatment.

Inhalation anesthesia is another option used in the sedation dentistry. Laughing gas or nitrous oxide is usually used in inhalation anesthesia. Nitrous oxide is the sedative gas which is inhaled when dentist places rubber mask over nose of the patient so that patient breathes it in directly. Patients mostly experience the feeling of lightheadedness and gradually then experiences the feeling of elation and happiness. It has rapid onset with no effects of lingering.

In oral conscious sedation, the dentist administers a pill to the patient before the treatment. Patient gradually becomes sleepy and can hardly be aware of the smells and sounds around him/her. Effects usually last for about four hours.

Intravenous sedation is also called conscious sedation or IV. The patients feel very drowsy after administering this. They have no memory of dental procedure but they can very well respond to dentist if needed. Intravenous sedation is administered by the specialist who stays with dentist at the time of the procedure.

In intramuscular sedation, the dentist injects the patient with sedative drug in the thigh or upper arm muscle. Sedation generally takes place within two minutes to half an hour depending on medication used.

General anesthesia is also an option to control pain for sedation dentistry. It is a combination of inhaled or injected combination. At the time of this treatment patients are asleep fully. Although effects of general anesthesia last for about hours, patients come back home two to four hours after the treatment.

There are many dental offices performing sedation dentistry. Select the best one where you can absolutely feel comfortable and safe .
